# CDC Reports Injuries from Car Crashes Frequent and Costly

Injuries from car crashes occur frequently and tend to be very expensive, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The report showed that more than **2.5 million people** went to emergency departments due to **crash-related injuries** in 2012 alone. Of that total, nearly 200,000 had to be hospitalized because of their injuries. New York car accident lawyers at Edelman, Krasin and Jaye have taken note of these new numbers and are concerned about the physical and emotional impact these injuries have on individuals and their families.

Ileana Arias, Ph.D., principal deputy director for the CDC, stated on the CDC website that those numbers trickle down to nearly **7,000 emergency department visits every day** in 2012 due to vehicle crash injuries. Lifetime medical costs for those 2012 injuries were $18 billion, while **financial losses due to lost work** totaled an estimated $33 billion.

“Motor vehicle crash injuries occur all too frequently and have health and economic costs for individuals, the health care system and society. We need to do more to keep people safe and reduce crash injuries and medical costs,” Arias said.

## Cost of car crash injuries

The report also found that the **average cost for a visit to the emergency department** was approximately** $3,300**. If hospitalization occurred, the lifetime cost could be as high as $57,000. More than three-fourths of those costs are accrued during the first 18 months following the car crash.

Although the 2012 numbers showed a decline in emergency department visits and hospitalizations from 2002, the frequency and cost of motor vehicle accidents are still a concern. According to the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration, injuries from vehicle crashes actually increased in 2012, after following a steady decline in the six years prior. Injuries were up 6.5 percent between 2011 and 2012, while **fatalities related to vehicle crashes** **went up 3.3 percent**.

**Medical expenses related to car accidents** are also **increasing at a rate faster than inflation**, according to the Insurance Research Council’s Auto Injury Insurance Claims Study.

## New York numbers

In New York alone, more than 124,000 people were injured in auto crashes in 2013. Nearly 10,000 of those injuries were considered serious by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. In most cases, the driver of one or more vehicles was hurt, but injuries also occurred to a significant number of passengers, pedestrians and bicyclists.

## Retaining a NY crash injury attorney

Injuries from vehicle crashes can take their toll on the individual and the entire family. The physical and emotional pain of those injuries can be long-lasting, while financial losses due to mounting medical bills and lost wages add to the stress of the situation. If you are injured in an car accident through no fault of your own, the burden can seem that much harder to bear.
