# NYC to Slam The Brakes on Dangerous Drivers in 2020

New York City officials are doubling down on vehicle crashes in the new year. This move comes after a dismal number of 215 traffic deaths in 2019, a 6% increase from 2018.

Trucks are allegedly the primary culprit for the recent uptick. According to Department of Transportation data, tractor-trailers, SUVs, vans and pick-up trucks were responsible for more than [40% of all traffic deaths](https://www.nydailynews.com/2019/12/23/as-traffic-deaths-tick-up-in-2019-nyc-officials-eye-crackdown-on-dangerous-truck-drivers/).

## Pedestrian and cyclists were the primary victims

As New York City has a broad commuting culture, it has expanded routes and rental options for bikers. Because of this, the city now sees more than [450,000 bike trips made daily](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/30/nyregion/new-yorkers-bike-lanes-commuting.html). Unfortunately, cyclists have accounted for a large portion of city traffic fatalities, as 28 got killed in 2019. Pedestrian deaths have also seen a surge, with 117 deaths in 2019.

What’s even more alarming is that 85% of the motorists allegedly at fault were trucks, vans or buses.

## Dangerous behavior when operating large vehicles

Some city police officials say they’ve noticed much negligence on behalf of some vehicle operators. Some of the actions they’ve witnessed include:

- Vehicles racing through red lights
- Backing up in places where they have low visibility

In reaction to this, the transportation wing of the NYPD has issued more than 30,000 citations to negligent motorists.

## City plans to make changes

Along with increased enforcement from authorities, the city is also working to help lower fatalities. One of the most significant moves they’re making is cutting the speed limit from 30 mph to 25mph on Third and Hamilton Aves. in Brooklyn. That’s because six people total got killed on those streets in 2019.
