# How to Prevent Swimming Pool Accidents

Many of us live to make the most of our summers and set aside time accordingly. Whether employment is linked to the school calendar or hours are more reasonable during the summer months, the season may offer more time for relaxation. The long days of sunshine and warmth provide opportunities to gather with friends and family at parties, celebrate summer holidays, feast on barbecue, play yard games, and spend time poolside, enjoying the beautiful weather.

Swimming pools are equated with ultimate summer fun, a place to unwind and cool down after the heat exhausts us. People of all ages can enjoy time frolicking in the water with their friends and family. However, where there is fun, there can also be danger that lurks. Anytime you are around a pool, you must understand the risks of potential injuries that may occur.

According to the [Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)](https://www.cdc.gov/index.html), about 3,500 people die each year from unintentional drowning. This statistic can be broken down even further, with ten deaths a day related explicitly to swimming pool accidents.

Besides death, many serious injuries can result from [falling](https://ekjlaw.com/long-island-ny/slip-and-fall-accident-lawyer/) in or around a [swimming pool or other pool-related accidents](https://ekjlaw.com/long-island-ny/premises-liability-lawyer/). Head, neck, and spinal cord injuries, broken bones, and electrocution can occur from pools. You can prevent mishaps with extra care and precaution.

**If you are going to be enjoying time in a pool, take the following safety measures into account: **

- Not all children and adults know how to swim, so if one of these individuals enters a pool, the situation can worsen fast. Understand the swimming abilities of those you are with to reduce the risk of drowning or injury.

- Drains can keep children underwater with force and suction. Pool owners are responsible for covering all drains to ensure everyone’s safety. If a pool does not have drain covers, be aware of the drain locations.

- Is there four-sided fencing that encloses the pool area? If not, children and those who cannot swim have unrestricted access, which may lead to a fatal situation. Pay extra attention to the whereabouts of unskilled swimmers under these circumstances.

- Is there a certified lifeguard present to monitor the pool area? When a lifeguard is present, you should still keep an eye on all swimmers. In the absence of a lifeguard, be extra diligent about safety (especially young children who can’t swim). Furthermore, if you watch children by a pool frequently, it would be beneficial to learn CPR.

- According to the CDC, 70% of water-related injuries and deaths among adults involve alcohol use. Those who have over-indulged should be prohibited from swimming to prevent pool accidents.

- Drowning is the most common cause of injury or death amongst those affected by a seizure disorder. Supervise any individuals with a related condition closely and inform lifeguards of who they should keep an extra eye on.
