Summertime Safety Tips: Boating

Summertime Safety Tips

Summertime is great, but remember to make safety a top priority so that summer is incident and accident-free. This year, after so many people avoided getting together for recreational activities due to COVID-19, many are excited to get back to outdoor recreation and fun. Stay alert. Here are four summertime safety tips to be aware of to prevent accidents.

Stay Safe Around Water

Safety around water is essential for children because drowning can occur in only a few seconds. Never dive into shallow water or an unknown body of water and never swim alone. Always supervise children in or around the water. A responsible adult should constantly watch young children and make sure they are not running in the pool area. Slip and fall accidents happen more often than you think. When boating, always wear a properly fitted life jacket, regardless of your swimming skills.

Safety for Grilling and Campfires

A great way to entertain in the summer is to have a BBQ with friends and family and enjoy an outdoor fire pit on cooler nights. A grill and fire pit are only to be operated by adults. Always keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the fire. The area must be cleared of any combustible items and debris. Don’t use flammable fluids (gasoline, lighter fluid, alcohol, kerosene, etc.) to light or relight fires. Keep an eye on your grill or fire pit. Don’t walk away from them when they are lit.

Keep plenty of water and a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies. Always remember to clean your grill and fire pit after use. Let coals and ashes burn out naturally.

Summer is the best time to be outdoors. With some planning, you and your family can enjoy the season and the summer holidays without injury.
