Schneider Electric Circuit Breakers Recalled

product liability - recall 1Circuit breakers produced by Schneider Electric have been recalled due to the risk of fire, burns, and electrical shock. The recall was announced on December 18 due to the fact that the circuit breakers will not trip during overload, as they should.

The products in question are the J-frame molded case circuit breakers with thermal-magnetic trip units. They are black plastic devices with a three-position handle, are produced in two and three pole configurations (with either lug-in/lug-out or plug-in style connections), and are rated for 150 to 250 amps.

The name “Schneider Electric” or “Square D” will appear in a yellow sticker on the top or side of the circuit breaker. The affected circuit breakers include those manufactured between March 24, 2014 and September 26, 2014 (date codes of 14131 through 14395). The model numbers in question are NJ and Square D catalog numbers beginning with “J”; such numbers can be found on the left-hand side of the breaker on the front.

Thus far, no injuries have been reported. Schneider Electric asks all who have purchased the circuit breakers to cease use immediately and contact the company for replacement or credit.

Product liability attorneys help injured victims

The Long Island product liability attorneys at Edelman, Krasin & Jaye are relieved that no serious injuries have been sustained due to the faulty circuit breakers that have recently been recalled. This is not the first major recall associated with the manufacturer, however: in 2013, Schneider Electric recalled 15 million surge protectors which it had stopped making 10 years before.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, several reports of damage and injury were reported concerning the SurgeArrest surge protectors before the recall was initiated. These included 13 reports of injuries due to smoke inhalation and burns as well as hundreds of reports of malfunctions and 55 reports of property damage, including damage in the hundreds of thousands of dollars caused by house fires.

This recent recall of the circuit breakers has been more timely, but injuries and damages suffered by some customers may yet be reported.
