Spate of Long Island Train Accidents

RR crossing freight trainRecent train accidents may have some Long Island residents concerned about the safety of the tracks. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is no stranger to serious accidents.

Individuals may suffer from serious or fatal injuries through no fault of their own. A LIRR train accident lawsuit might demand compensation on behalf of an injured party because of dangerous equipment malfunction, conductor error, or improperly constructed or marked railroad crossings.

Spate of recent accidents

One of the most recent train accidents on Long Island occurred on August 17. An unidentified woman was struck by an eastbound LIRR train in Nassau County at the Great Neck station. The accident occurred during the late morning hours. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital. The details of her condition were not released, nor were any details of the accident, such as how the woman came to be in the path of the oncoming train. It is unknown whether the woman or her surviving relatives plan to file a train accident lawsuit against LIRR.

When non-train vehicles are involved in a railroad accident, they are typically cars or trucks that become stuck on the tracks. However, one person is dead and one injured after a small plane crashed onto the LIRR tracks in Bethpage, Long Island. This crash occurred on August 16. The single-engine Hawker Beechcraft BE35 crashed on the tracks on South Oyster Bay Road. It isn’t yet known why the crash occurred, but Nassau County police and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the possibility of mechanical problems. The accident could have been much worse; at the time of the crash, no trains were approaching the crossing and there were no automobiles nearby.

Recovering compensation for train accident injuries

There are many factors that can contribute to a train accident. Victims of LIRR train accidents can contact a lawyer to find out if they may be eligible to file a personal injury lawsuit. An attorney can investigate the case to determine if the cause of the accident might establish liability. For example, some train accidents are the result of conductor error. A conductor might be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which could lead to grave errors in judgment. The conductor could fall asleep at the wheel or use excessive speed, causing an accident. Victims of train accidents could recover compensation for medical treatments, disfigurement, disability, loss of earning capacity, among other damages.
