Two Construction Workers Lose Their Lives In Trench Collapse Incident At JFK Airport
Earlier this month, two construction workers tragically lost their lives at JFK Airport after a trench collapsed while they were working. Incidents like these are another reminder to follow your workplace’s safety regulations, especially if your job is considered high-risk.
The Accident
Two construction wokers, Francisco Reyes and Fernando Lagunas Pereira, were moving utility utility lines near a power plant to provide JFK with more energy. Currently, the airport is undergoing a multi-million dollar redevelopment project, including adding new terminals and renovating existing ones.
As they were working, the 30-foot trench they were working in collapsed, leaving them trapped under a concrete slab. Dozens of paramedics, firefighters, and other first responders tried to rescue the two men. But despite their best efforts, the accident killed them instantly.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is investigating what caused it. For the time being, all construction at the site has been stopped until further notice.
Leading Causes Of Construction Accidents
This tragic accident is, unfortunately, one of many that happen each year. In fact, roughly 20% of workplace injuries occur in that industry alone.
Some of the main causes of construction accidents are:
- Failure to follow safety measures
- Not being appropriately trained on how to use equipment or safety gear
- Human error
- Equipment not functioning properly
- Falling objects
- Electrical problems
- Weather-related hazards
Even if you know it’s a dangerous job, employers and contracting companies must ensure their employees have the proper training and equipment to keep them safe. When they don’t, it can result in serious legal consequences, and they can be held responsible for any damages you sustain.
Why This Accident Is Important
The JFK airport catastrophe is a harsh reminder that prioritizing workplace safety is crucial to preventing something similar from happening in the future. Thousands of construction workers suffer fatalities each year, and many of them have lifelong trauma and damages they won’t be able to recover from. In more severe accidents, they may be unable to work and provide for their families. Contractors and companies must be proactive and ensure their workers have the proper training and safety gear to perform their work responsibilities safely.
